One of Britain's last great independent financial markets has agreed to sell itself to China. The 137-year-old London Metal Exchange has agreed a £1.4bn takeover from Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEx) after a nine-month auction process which saw bids from InterContinental Exchange, CME Group and NYSE Nasdaq.

Silver is for Champions

The thoughts of millions of ice hockey fans turned to silver this week – more specifically, to the nearly 35 pounds of silver in the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup, the century-old championship symbol of professional hockey. The Los Angeles Kings ultimately lifted high the iconic trophy made of sterling silver.

Physical silver demand heading higher

The silver price is depressed compared with its historical relationship to gold, one ounce being worth about 55 of silver, against the historical rate of 15 or 16. The reason, perhaps, has to do with silver’s demonetisation and its role as an industrial metal. However, with global supply from mines and recycling running at about one billion ounces and demand at only a hundred million less, it does not take much investment demand to create a severe shortage.
